Lunacy Berlin: A Farewell to Freedom and Fantasy
Berlin has always been a city where creativity, freedom, and underground culture come alive. Among the wild variety of parties and events, House of Red Doors — later known as House of Lunacy — became one of the most iconic names in Berlin’s nightlife. Created by Billie Rae and her talented team, Lunacy offered something different: a complete universe built around performance, art, kink, and deep human connection. Today, as we face the final year of Lunacy at Salon zur Wilden Renate, we take a moment to celebrate everything this party created — and everything it gave to Berlin.
House of Lunacy created something that hadn’t been done so well before. It wasn’t just a party. It was a world — a living, breathing experience where every guest became part of the story. Every two months, a new deep concept would transform the space: Fantasy Fairground, Weimar Weimar, Deep Voyage, Golden Ecstasy, Midsummer Dreaming, Circus and Beasts, and many more. The themes were never shallow or simple. They were rich, layered, and demanded real participation. Guests didn’t just dress up — they became characters. Makeup, costumes, and attitude all came together to create a total transformation. At the heart of Lunacy stood creativity, consent, and freedom. The performances, the energy, the art — everything was designed to engage, provoke, and inspire. It was a queer, open, expressive space where the Berlin underground shined at its brightest. Lunacy wasn’t about standing still. It was about moving, exploring, connecting. The performers, drawn from all corners of Berlin’s creative world — circus, kink, burlesque, fetish, drag — brought the night to life in every room and corner. The house itself was part of the performance.
In 2025, Salon zur Wilden Renate will close its doors for good — and with it, House of Lunacy will come to an end. Lunacy and Renate are deeply connected. The space, the energy, the feeling — they belong to each other. Some parties simply cannot exist in another home, and Lunacy is one of them. The organizers didn’t choose to end the journey. They stayed loyal to Renate until the very last dance. Finding a new place that fits the concept so perfectly will be a real challenge. Renate, with its hidden rooms and strange, surreal layout, was the perfect playground for the Lunacy world.
For now, only a few final chances remain to experience Lunacy: 31st of July – probably Midsummer Dream; 25th of September – theme not announced yet, but we (The Code) will take part — more to come; 30th of October – probably Halloween; and 27th of November – the Final Lunacy. If you have never been, this is your last chance. If you have been and loved it, come back to celebrate one more time. Moments like these don’t repeat.
House of Lunacy will leave behind a deep mark on Berlin’s nightlife. They showed what it means to create a true artistic party — not just music and lights, but a complete world of performance, freedom, and human connection. Maybe new parties like Lunchbox Candy, will bring some new energy to the scene. But Lunacy set a standard that will be hard to match. It was a pioneer — bringing together so many different performers, so many different communities, and making it feel natural, wild, and free. Thousands of visitors danced, dreamed, and found themselves inside House of Lunacy and, before that, House of Red Doors. If this is truly the end, Berlin owes them a huge thank you. Nobody knows what the future will bring. Maybe something new will grow. Maybe this is the end of an era. Only time will tell.
There are still a few parties left. If you have never been to House of Lunacy, now is the time. If you have been before and loved it, keep going, keep celebrating. These are the final moments of something special — a creation that brought art, freedom, kink, and community together in a way Berlin had never seen before. It’s emotional to see it ending. But for now, we dance, we dress up, we celebrate, and we say thank you. Thank you to the creators. Thank you to the performers. Thank you to everyone who made Lunacy a place where we could be wild, be free, and be ourselves. See you inside the madness.
