Opinion: Raving vs. Clubbing – You’re Not a Raver

I never understood why people here often say, “I’m going to a rave.” Living in Berlin for 10 years, I can count the number of true raves I’ve attended on one hand. One unforgettable experience stands out—it was in an old school building somewhere in Lichtenberg. I won’t name the collective, but it was insane. Four floors of music, incredible sound systems, and absolute freedom. No rules, no policies—just pure, unfiltered self-expression. For me, this is the essence of a rave: a raw, underground space where anything goes.

On the flip side, parties or clubbing events are more structured. You buy a ticket, and part of that goes to the government, making it more official. Sure, these parties can be marathon sessions—like 24 hours in Berghain or 16 hours at KitKat—but they’re still structured and legal. They create a different vibe—one that’s just as exciting but lacks the raw chaos and freedom that define a rave.

In our time, when you’re stepping into Berlin’s clubs, you’re not a “raver”; you’re a “clubber.” You’re going to some of the most iconic, insane clubs in the world, where the experience is unmatched, but it’s not a rave—it’s something else entirely. Berlin’s club scene is legendary for a reason, offering a unique mix of music, fashion, and a sense of belonging. But let’s be clear: as epic as these nights are, they’re not raves. They’re structured, curated, and perfectly designed to deliver the ultimate clubbing experience.

It’s worth asking: is it really a rave, or just an unforgettable night out at one of the world’s best clubs? For me, the distinction matters because it’s not just about the music or the outfits—it’s about the essence of the experience and what it represents.
